Feminists Advocating Change and Empowerment
December 9, 2008
We will be putting on the Vagina Monologues in the spring, probably the first weekend of March, or sometime around then. We discussed possible venues and decided that Olin 130 will probably be our best bet, specifically because it has a larger capacity than Kimball does. We are still waiting on approval from the official V-Day organization folks, but once we get that (which should happen by the end of this week if all goes well), we will be able to move forward with finding directors and actors.
Next semester, due to the enormous success of Staceyann Chin last year, we want to have another spoken word artist/musician/performance artist come to campus and perform at Coffeehouse. If you have anyone in mind whose work has to do with feminist issues, feel free to let us know.
Other programming ideas that were discussed (for next semester or next year):
-put a piece of butcher paper up in Reid asking "What does feminism mean to you?" and allowing people to write responses
-(for next year) have a panel of faculty discuss how feminism is relevant today; similar to the event we had this year, but having a panel will provide the opportunity for several different perspectives to be represented
-talk to Barbara Maxwell about getting the Consent posters to represent different types of couples (rather than allowing heterosexual, monoracial couples to be the only ones that are represented, as is the current situation). Maybe work with Coalition on this.
-Stevens Gallery submissions about feminism, maybe doing something similar to the Hapa Project last year where students had their picture taken and got to write a brief statement. We could have the statement have something to do with feminism and how it relates to them, etc.
Those of you who came to the meeting for the first time today - you rock! Hope everyone
has a good break, and we'll meet again in January and start gearing up for the Vagina
Monologues.

The self-defense workshop last Sunday, though poorly attended, went well. We spent some time at the meeting brainstorming how we can advertise more effectively and get more people to come to events like this one. Next year, if we do a similar workshop, we want to do it in the first couple of weeks of school and advertise it with the events for freshmen that go on during those weeks.
On Thursday, November 20, Stanley Green is going to give his talk, entitled Power, Sex, and Respect. This talk will be at 7 PM in the Anderson main lounge. We are co-hosting the event with the Interfraternity Council.
After Thanksgiving break, we are going to work on finding directors for the Vagina Monologues. We are going to askpeople enrolled in the Directing class in the theater department if they want to direct a monologue. After Winter break we will do auditions for the monologues. We are hoping to perform the Vagina Monologues in early March.

At tonight's meeting, we took a field trip over to Calhoon's Martial Arts Studio. Make sure to come to the self-defense workshop this Sunday. We will be meeting at 9:45 in Jewett in order to walk over together.
We are working on finding a venue for Stanley Green's talk on the 20th. We are going to be co-sponsoring this event with the Interfraternity council.
Before winter break, we are going to contact some of the people in the directors class to see if any of them would be interested in directing some of the monologues for the Vagina Monologues. After winter break, we will be looking for actors.

Ryan Calhoon will be doing a self-defense workshop, tentatively on Sunday November 9 from 10-12. This workshop will be primarily directed towards women, though all are invited. However, we are going to target the advertising towards women. The workshop will be taking place at the Calhoon Marial Arts Studio, which is a few blocks away. We may need some people to walk people from Whitman over to the Martial Arts Studio, so keep an eye out for an email about that.
Stanley Green will be coming on November 20. He will be speaking from 7-8 PM on some topic related to masculinity, though he has not yet given us the title of his talk. He wants to speak to a mixed audience. We are currently looking for a space to hold this talk in, but we are thinking either in a fraternity or in a residence hall lounge.

Professor Hanrahan will be giving a talk entitled "Orgasm, Heart Attack, and Childcare" this Thursday, October 9, at 7 PM. Bring your friends and learn about how feminism is still relevant in your life today.
We will be doing a self-defense workshop with Ryan Calhoun, tentatively on Saturday, November 15. We are hoping to partner with the sororities, or at least just Kappa. We are currently deciding whether this workshop should be open only to women or to everyone.
Stanley Green, a speaker on masculinity and a survivor of domestic violence, will be coming on November 20 to speak. We are still waiting to hear back from him about accommodations and fees. We may partner with the fraternities on this.
We are starting to think about the Vagina Monologues for next semester. The rights are open from February 1 to April 30. We are hoping to have some people in the director's class run by the Drama department to direct the monologues.
We have a new website! The address is http://whitmanface.weebly.com. Check it out and let me know if you have any ideas as to how it can be improved.

Professor Hanrahan will be giving her talk about feminism on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 PM. She will be giving the same talk that she gave two years ago. We are hoping to have this event in the Jewett main lounge. Once Professor Hanrahan gives us a title for her talk and we know for sure where we are holding it, we will begin advertising like crazy. We may also have food there to lure people into coming.
Stanley Green is interested in coming to do a workshop. He has not gotten back to us yet about specific dates he would be available, but we are hoping to have him come sometime between 4-day and Thanksgiving break.
We are in charge of the Intercultural Cafe on January 20. Basically all this means is that we have to bring food.
Fall Visitors Days are on October 10 and November 7, and the folks who put this together are looking for students to speak on a panel (at 10 AM) about their experiences at Whitman.
The next meeting will be on Monday, October 6 at 7:30 PM in the Reid Basement.

According to the Student Activities Office about Ryan Calhoun (self defense) and Stanley Green (masculinities), the next steps we have to go through in order to have them come will be to contact them about available dates and figure out funding stuff.
We are hoping to have Professor Hanrahan speak sometime in the week after October 3. Once we have a date picked out, we will need to reserve a space (a classroom in Olin or Jewett/Anderson main lounge) and do a lot of advertising to encourage people to come.
McKenna has been in touch with Ozzie Angel, who is doing a very specific project in the Stevens gallery relating to gender, and he has said we can help by doing a general submission thing about what gender means to people that will go around his pieces in the gallery. We don't know when this will be yet.
Next semester we are hoping to get female politicians to come speak, so we are in the process of contacting them.
An idea was brought up about distributing stickers or t-shirts relating to feminism, which people could wear.
We're still in need of someone with some website know-how to help update the FACE website. It hasn't been updated since 2003, which is a little bit pathetic.
Meetings will now be at 7:30 on Mondays in Reid Basement (note the time change). See you all next week.

-Self Defense workshop: sometime a few years ago, Barbara Maxwell hired someone from the community named Ryan Calhoun to do a self-defense workshop, and she recommended him to us. We will need to collaborate with another group in order to put this on. Some ideas for who to collaborate with were VOX or the sororities.
-Freshman thing: we want to have an event/talk for freshmen focusing on what feminism is and how one can be a feminist. Gabby will be asking Professor Hanrahan if she would be willing to do something like this. We want to put this event on soon to capture the interest of the first-years before they get too busy.
-Masculinities workshop: Karlis has been in contact with (?) someone named Stanley Green who does speaks/does workshops on something to do with masculinity. We hope to bring him or another speaker to campus at some point and maybe partner with the fraternities to do this.
-Art & feminism: McKenna found out that another student has already expressed interest in doing a project similar to this, but more broadly in terms of art and gender. We are going to ask if we can collaborate with this student.
-Voter registration: We are going to ask the Young Democrats if we can help with their efforts to get people registered, and maybe bring the Campus Conservatives into the effort as well.
-FACE potluck: We want to do a potluck with the theme of woman writers. Basically, you would name your dish after a certain female writer and, if you wish, come dressed up as that writer. We were thinking of doing this with the Writing House. We will do this soon, in the next couple of weeks.
The next meeting will be next Monday at 7:00 PM in the Reid basement.

Thanks to all of you who showed up today. It was great to see the enthusiasm in old faces and new faces alike.
Our meeting date and time in the future will be MONDAYS at 7:00 PM in the Reid Basement.
The officers for this semester are: McKenna - President, Gabby - VP and Treasurer, Lee - Scribe. If anyone else feels a burning need to be an officer, let McKenna know and she will find a position for you. :)
The FACE website has not been updated since 2003, and we are hoping to fix that problem soon. If you have experience in website creation (or know someone who does), please let us know.
Some ideas for the upcoming year:
-Vagina Monologues - this will be performed in February, and we're hoping to get started on it before winter break
-Masculinities speaker/panel - maybe do this with the fraternities
-Self-defense workshop
-Get people registered to vote! - possibly partner with the Young Democrats and/or the Campus Conservatives
-Do something relating to art and feminism, either in the Stevens Gallery or all over campus
-Some sort of programming for freshmen to get them knowledgeable and excited about feminism
