Feminists Advocating Change and Empowerment
April 13, 2009
Saturday, April 18th is the Imagine Celebration, which is a fun campus/community event put on by the Intercultural Center. FACE is going to have a booth, complete with a feminist-themed bean bag toss. We need people to volunteer to be at the booth. Even if you haven't done much with FACE this year, this is a great way to get involved. The
event runs from 12-3, so if you can be there for any/all of that time, please let us know. It will be fun!
Also, if anybody has any hackey sacks lying around, it would be awesome if you would let us borrow them to use as bean bags. So let us know if you've got any that we can borrow for the afternoon.
We're in the process of emailing professors that we think would be good to have on the feminism panel early next year, so hopefully we'll hear back from a few of them soon and then we can get rolling on that.

The Imagine Celebration is coming up on Saturday, April 18. We decided that we are going to create a bean bag toss for this event, using the feminist symbol as the holes. We will be creating the board for this sometime before the event. We will also be getting candy to pass out, and we will have some of those "You might be a feminist if..."
brochures to pass out as well. We will likely be looking for people to take shifts at the booth, so keep an eye out for an email about that.
We also discussed ideas for next year. At the beginning of the year (maybe the 2nd week of school), we want to have a panel at which professors or community members speak about feminism and what it means to them. Then, in October, we would like to show a movie that has some sort of feminist-related message. Also, at some point during the year, we are hoping to bring a speaker, a musician, or a spoken word artist to campus.

Great job everyone getting ready for The Vagina Monologues! It's been a big push, so we're taking a break :)
Our next meeting will be the first week after Spring Break. We discussed wanting to screen a movie after Spring Break - please send us your ideas for a movie we could screen! We'd love a movie that would stimulate discussion.
Titles we tossed around were:
Beloved
Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios
Mona Lisa Smile
Please let us know if you have any movie ideas!!!
Or if you have any programming ideas for the rest of the semester.

We haven't heard yet about whether or not the FAH wants to partner with us for the exhibit in the Stevens Gallery. Hopefully more info on that soon.
We discussed a few things related to the Vagina Monologues, including fliers and tickets, as well as the traditional vagina cookies.
We will be meeting with Barbara Maxwell this Friday at 1 PM in order to talk with her about the sexual assault programs that the first-years go through every year as part of orientation. We will be meeting upstairs at the couches by the Activities Office.
Our next meeting will be next Monday at 7:30 PM in the Reid basement.

Barbara Maxwell sounds receptive to talking with us about revising the first-year sexual assault talks. Stay tuned for info regarding this meeting; any interested people will be welcome to join us as we discuss this important issue with Barbara Maxwell.
The parts for the Vagina Monologues have been cast. Thanks to all who auditioned!
We are planning to put up the tripod thing in Reid with questions written on it to which students can respond. We are going to do this the week before the Vagina Monologues. Some of the questions we came up with were "What does feminism mean to you," and "If your vagina could wear anything, what would it wear." We are looking for more ideas for questions, so if you have anything that would be a cool open-response question to be put on the tripod, let us know.
Later in the semester we are hoping to put on an exhibit in the Stevens Gallery. We are going to contact the FAH to inquire about the possibility of displaying the breast castings that they do every spring. More info on that later.
Sometime this semester, we want to do a fun social event. We are thinking about a potluck with another club. We might make this productive by making advertising signs during it, or we might make it just for fun.

Vagina Monologues
-The YWCA and Planned Parenthood will be the beneficiaries for this year's Vagina Monologues.
-We need to get started on creating a poster for the Monologues
Speaker/Performing Artist
-Some possibilities discussed were Aya DeLeon and Raining Jane
-Discussed whether we wanted to have an explicitly feminist performer or if it would be fine to just bring a performer who was a woman
On Saturdays at 3 PM there will be a radio show about female musicians, hosted by one of our very own FACEers, so stay tuned for that
Follow-up to Stanley Green's talk
-McKenna sent an email to Barbara Maxwell to ask to talk to her about expanding the opening week sexual assault talks
-some of the problems mentioned with the talks as they are included the fact that there wasn't enough emphasis on men as victims or on women as perpetrators, and also that the gender segregation might be unnecessary
-we are thinking of possibly holding a forum to see about how best to revise the program
Art Installation in Stevens Gallery
-allow people to write on the walls asking what feminism means to them
-we would have to repaint the walls afterward
-alternatively, we could use the tripod thing and put it in the middle of Reid, and ask people to write on that
Next week's meeting will be on Monday at 7 PM.
